Cassia Obovata: All the Benefits of Neutral Henna for Strong, Shiny Hair

Nov 25, 2025
Cassia Obovata: tutti i benefici dell’Henné Neutro per capelli forti e luminosi

Cassia obovata , also known as neutral henna , is a plant with extraordinary strengthening and shine-enhancing properties for hair. Unlike traditional red henna, it doesn't alter hair color, but adds volume, shine, and health. In this article, we'll discover what Cassia obovata is, its history, its benefits for hair, and how to best use it for a completely natural treatment .

What is Cassia obovata?

Cassia obovata is a plant belonging to the Fabaceae family, native to the arid regions of Africa and Asia. Its dried and ground leaves yield a green-yellow powder that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic tradition to purify and strengthen hair .
It is known as " neutral henna " because, although it shares the same application method and some properties as classic henna, it does not allow you to dye your hair. Its effect is therefore purely healing and restructuring .
Traditional henna ( Lawsonia inermis ), in fact, contains an orange-copper pigment that colors the hair.
Cassia obovata, on the other hand, doesn't color hair, but rather restructures and polishes it. For this reason, it's ideal for those who want to strengthen their hair without altering its tone.

A bit of history and curiosities about Cassia obovata

Cassia obovata has a very ancient tradition of use: already in Ancient Egypt, it was known as a natural remedy for hair and skin care. Remains of plant powders similar to those of Cassia have been found in some tombs, used to keep hair shiny and healthy.
In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, Cassia is considered a "purifying" herb ( Rasayana ), capable of balancing the scalp and invigorating the hair fiber. It was often mixed with other herbs such as Amla , Brahmi , or Shikakai to enhance their effects.
In some regions of the Middle East and Africa, Cassia leaves were also used medicinally, as a purifying infusion or a soothing treatment for irritated skin.

Cassia obovata was considered a “sun plant” for its ability to reflect light and illuminate the hair and, in ancient Ayurvedic recipes, it was mixed with lemon juice or green tea to amplify its shine-enhancing power.

Properties and benefits of Cassia obovata for hair

Using Cassia for hair is a true natural beauty ritual . Here are the main benefits of this treatment:

• Strengthens the hair fibre: Cassia creates a thin natural film around the hair, making it more resistant and reducing the possibility of breakage.
• Gives volume and body: perfect for fine hair, increases body and combability.
• Shine: gives intense brightness, making hair more beautiful from the first application.

• Purifies the scalp: its antibacterial and sebum-regulating properties help combat dandruff and oily skin.
• Conditions and detangles: leaves hair soft and silky, without weighing it down.
• Natural golden effect: on light hair it can give very light, warm and luminous golden reflections.

NOTE: Despite being a neutral plant, Cassia has a very light yellow pigment that can be visible on white, very light, or bleached hair. It is precisely this pigment that makes it an excellent highlighter.

How to use Cassia on your hair

Preparing a Cassia hair pack is quick and easy:

  1. Mix the powder with hot water until you get a soft, smooth cream.
  2. Apply the batter to clean, slightly damp hair, from roots to ends.
  3. Cover with cling film or a cap and leave to rest for 30 minutes up to 1 hour.
  4. Rinse well with water only, without shampoo.

💡 Tip: For a perfect rinse, use the Co-Wash Districante.

The ideal plant for all hair types

Cassia obovata is suitable for all hair types , even treated, bleached, or weak hair. It is particularly recommended for:
• damaged or brittle hair
• greasy or dandruff hair
• dull hair
• those who want a natural volume effect

It's also excellent as a preparatory pack before dyeing : it improves hair porosity and color retention. Therefore, it's particularly suitable, for example, when trying herbal hair products for the first time, especially after using traditional hair dyes.

With regular use, hair becomes stronger, shinier and healthier , regaining its natural beauty.

A simple gesture, inherited from ancient traditions, which today returns to play a leading role in modern cosmetics.
