How to apply Henna and herbal powders to hair?

Preparing the paste is an essential step for a successful application. If it is too thick or too thin, it can compromise the action of the henna and herbal powders, resulting in incomplete coverage/shading or an uneven result.
The paste should be applied generously to clean, slightly damp hair. The head should then be wrapped in plastic wrap.

Do herbal dyes cover gray hair?

Herbal dyes cover even 100% of gray hair perfectly from the very first treatment!
You just need to know how to do it properly. Choose the right plant or mixture for the color you want to achieve, prepare the paste correctly, apply it evenly (abundantly and trying to cover the entire area you want to color), wait the right amount of time, and rinse properly. Experience and practice are undoubtedly necessary.

Can I lighten my hair with plant-based dyes?

No, it's impossible to lighten the natural hair pigment with plant-based dyes. Unlike classic dyes that open the hair cuticle, depigment it, and color it with their synthetic pigment, these dyes work by layering on top of the existing pigment. Therefore, they can only produce a tone-on-tone color or a darker shade.

Can I use herbs during pregnancy/breastfeeding?

There are no official studies regarding the relationship between herbs, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. We, above all, hope that the scientific community will dedicate itself to this increasingly important field.
This lack of specific studies, however, also indicates that there has never been a clear problem, otherwise there would already be a broad and clear body of literature on the subject.

We have never encountered any problems with our products, and there have never been any reported cases of negative effects from using herbs during pregnancy or breastfeeding. On the contrary, we have always received excellent feedback.

Generally, the only products on the market that should be avoided are henna products that are not 100% plant-based, for example, those with added picramate. Above all, we advise against using brands that do not guarantee all the necessary safety controls for a topical cosmetic product. In fact, dyeing plants are a cosmetic product in their own right and must therefore meet all the necessary requirements to be legally compliant: controlled microbial load (in the case of herbs, sanitization is required), guaranteed stability and PAO (Period After Opening), dermatological tests, and so on.

All our plants are 100% plant-based, without picramate or anything else, and are checked from every point of view to guarantee maximum safety; they are finally notified to the CPNP (European Cosmetic Notification Portal).

One of the plants that most frightens pregnant or breastfeeding women is fenugreek, as it is often read online that it could cause hormonal changes. However, this information is incorrect in the case of cosmetic treatments. The use of fenugreek during pregnancy and breastfeeding is only discouraged for internal use, i.e., as a food supplement.
For external use, it does not cause any problems (except for personal intolerances or allergies to the plant).

Our advice, for using herbs safely, is to always perform a skin test to check for any intolerances or allergies. In fact, as with food, it's always possible to have personal intolerances or allergies to specific plants.

How to store the powder or batter?

Once the package is opened, any remaining powder can be stored in its tightly sealed bag and kept in a cool, dry place.
Ready-made batter, on the other hand, can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days or can be frozen and kept in the freezer for up to about three months, depending on the product and the initial condition of the batter.

How do you rinse the batter?

To rinse off the hair mask, the ideal product is the Detangling Co-Wash. Alternatively, you can also use a conditioner (obviously eco-bio certified 😊); the important thing is not to use shampoo again for at least 48 hours after the treatment.

I have bleached hair, can I use neutral plants?

Generally yes, but be aware: some neutral plants can sometimes release a slight pigment, which may be visible on very light, bleached and/or particularly porous hair. Therefore, in the cases mentioned above, we always recommend a test on a hidden strand to see what result would be obtained on your hair before applying the paste to the entire head. Alternatively, we recommend plants without pigments such as Baobab or Goond Katira.

Can I use herbal dyes if I've used conventional dyes before?

Yes, you can use herbs even after dyeing your hair. For safety, we recommend waiting about two to three weeks between a chemical treatment and a herbal treatment, and vice versa.

Do your herbal products contain only plants?

Yes, all our herbal products (neutral or coloring) from both the I Semplici and Arte d'Erbe lines are composed of 100% dried, micronized plant powder, packaged in Italy and sanitized. Even in the case of clays, we are talking about 100% natural clays without any added preservatives or additives of any kind.

Can multiple herbs or blends be mixed together?

Herbs and herbal blends can be mixed together without any problem. You just need to know how to do it correctly, especially when it comes to color, in order to achieve the right balance for your needs.
Our advice is to prepare the pastes of the products you want to combine separately and then combine them into a single compound. This way you can compose your personalized color treatment correctly. For herbs or neutral mixtures, however, there is no problem in preparing everything together at the same time.
